Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
