Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of state military personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from Chicago, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including homicides.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 state military forces preparing to mobilize, per reports. Officials indicated the troops would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard patches were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" dropped off sanitation facilities and essential items. Mobile units were set up in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, urging a court to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and risky".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused the president of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has stated he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or discussed deploying military units to at least 10 cities, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were down nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data published on that day found that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
