McDonald's has removed a Christmas advert made using AI following facing significant online backlash.

The short spot was created via generative AI clips and was first released online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Reaction and Removal

Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the commercial. A number of labeled it "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience represents an key lesson as we examine the effective use of generative technology," commented a representative from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that might go awry over the festive season, using the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Adverts that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among prominent corporations, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos created using current AI video tools are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some commenters noting it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an experiment," she said. "The result was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, several companies have also encountered scrutiny for employing AI in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that critics described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the evolving debate within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
