Senate Passes Legislation to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of official records concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next goes to Donald Trump for his approval. He signaled on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were watching from a House gallery, broke into applause after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he worried the measure would disclose personal information of people, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
