RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
